ULLL Opening Day
posted 5/23/2013 by Donald Fletcher
Submitted to me by Carri Michon on 4/30/13.  I have also added Photo Albums for Hamilton, Lovettsville, & Purcellville.
The past two glorious Saturdays have found many a family at the baseball diamond.  Games have begun and with that Opening Day ceremonies for Little League baseball around our small towns here in western Loudoun.  A snapshot includes:

Parades: Both Lovettsville and Hamilton had parades and it is clear that the children love a parade!  Erik Rohs, a AAA Reds player from Lovettsville said,  "My favorite thing about Opening Day is riding in the parade with my team through town."  Sage Lin, a AA Pirate, loved riding in the truck.  His mom, Wendy, added "that the Hamilton Parade is a fun tradition to be a part of."

Ceremonies: Lovettsville, Hamilton, Round Hill and Purcellville all held individual Opening Ceremonies.  The colors were officially presented in Lovettsville by Colonel Wesley Fox of the Young Marines and in Hamilton by the US Navy Presidential Color Guard.  Around the towns, National Anthems were sung by elementary school students, a mayor's daughter as in Round Hill by the barbershop quartet, Mint Condition. Purcellville included a tribute to the late Don Rose, Sr and his great contribution to youth sports in western Loudoun.  It was noted that there have been many instrumental people over the 53 years of Upper Loudoun Little League who have keep the league running so that the children can play the game of baseball.

First pitches hurled:  In Lovettsville, opening pitches were thrown by Mayor Bobby Zoldos and Supervisor Geary Higgins.  Said the Mayor, "while my pitch was a nice strike on the inside corner, Supervisor Higgins's pitch bounced to the plate.  Supervisor Higgins reminded the crowd that he was a wrestler in school - not a ballplayer!"  Aaron Lautenschlager of the Majors Indians caught for Mayor Lazaro in Purcellville and said, "It was cool to catch the ceremonial first pitch from the mayor."  Donny Rose also threw out a ceremonial first pitch in Purcellville while Mayor Greg Wilmoth tossed a nice strike concluding the opening ceremony during the Town of Hamilton Day.

Dignitaries:  Adding to the fun, both Round Hill and Purcellville had Fetch, the mascot for the new minor league team, the Loudoun Hounds, as one of their visiting dignitaries.  In Purcellville, Fetch high fived each player as they ran on the field when their name was announced.  Bob Smedile, managing the AA Cubs this year said his team was especially thrilled with Fetch.  "It was a highlight for them", said he.  Supervisors attended - Janet Clark attended both the Round Hill and Purcellville ceremonies and Geary Higgins in Lovettsville but clearly, as the children go, the mascot ruled.

There was even a clever wrap up in Round Hill with their 3rd annual "Running of the Tees" led by Majors Red Sox manager, Frank Piliere.  Summing up the weekends of parades and ceremonies celebrating youth sports and baseball in particular, Mayor Bobby Zoldos of Lovettsville said, "It was a day in the type of grand traditions celebrated by little towns around the national past time!"

Now the resounding words of spring ... Play Ball!

Rawlings Helmet Modification Policy
posted 6/4/2012 by Donald Fletcher
We have received a document regarding modifications to Rawlings Helmets.  You either view the PDF file or read it below:

This has to do with the issue of the kids wearing their travel helmets that have a sticker applied to them during Little League games.

Rawlings Helmet Modification Policies

DECAL POLICY

The issue of applying decals and labels to helmets has been raised by numerous leagues.  The application of pressure sensitive decals and labels onto Rawlings helmets does not have a detrimental effect on the helmet when used with smaller decals.

There are some adhesives used on pressure decals that can attack the polymer used in Rawlings batting helmets if large decals are placed on the helmet.

Rawlings approves the use of pressure sensitive decals on helmets for team logos and player numbers as long as the size of the decals does not exceed 20% of the surface area of the helmet.

The decals should not cover the Rawlings logo, warnings, date of manufacture, or NOCSAE logo.  The covering of this information would void the NOCSAE approval of the helmet.

Rawlings does not approve the use of additional adhesives to attach the decal or the use of an additional coating to the decals. The use of additional substances to the decal may alter the properties of the helmet shell material.

The use of decals outside of the stated policy will void the Rawlings warranty.

PAINT POLICY

Rawlings does not endorse, recommend or approve of any additional painting, clear coating, or airbrushing of the batters helmets. Some paints can cause shell deterioration, which would adversely affect player safety. The helmets are offered in multiple paint variations by the Rawlings factories and are NOCSAE certified using only Rawlings approved coatings.

The use of additional coatings will void the Rawlings warranty.

ULLL is looking for umpires
posted 3/2/2012 by Donald Fletcher
It is a warm spring evening, the grass has just been cut, and the clean smell of freshly raked earth permeates the air. The senses are on overtime.

There is a routine rhythm to putting on the equipment. The shin guards, the chest protector, check the mask, the shoes are polished. In the near distance you can hear the kids talking, the parents are filing in. The lights are warming up as the sun slowly falls to the western sky. It is almost time. Last minute talks with your partner and the walk to the field. The stomach churns, the mind races through the scenarios that may occur. The gate squeaks as you and your partner walk on the field. It is now yours.

The fans and players look to see you stride toward the dugout. Coaches watch as you inspect the equipment, players say “hey blue”. It is baseball, America’s pastime, and you are in charge. You hear the coaches yell last minute instructions to the players, the pop of ball hitting gloves as the defense warms up. “Coaches to the plate”. The plate conference, ground rules, lineup. Your partner heads to first; you pull the brush, clean the plate. Everything looks in place. The first batter walks nervously to the plate. You tap the catcher on the helmet-“you ready”, ”yes sir”,” batter you ready”, “yes sir”. You check with your partner, he gives you the sign. You look at the pitcher and tell him “Play ball”.

The game begins and you are the plate umpire. The game needs you and so do we. ULLL wants and needs umpires. Young men or women 13 or older are wanted to umpire Little League in western Loudoun. It is a great way to be a part of the game, have a good time and make a few dollars as well.

Upper Loudoun Little League is very proud of our officials, the young and not so young, that makes this game work so well. Training is provided in our preseason clinics, on and off the field. Some of the best adults in the area help you learn, most of who have been to state or regional playoffs, and some who have even gone to the Little League World Series. One of our recent rookies, Reid Joyner, just completed Pro-Umpire School in Florida and will be doing Coastal League games soon. We are quite proud of him.  Join our ranks and be the next to start and possibly become a pro umpire-or just have a good time on a spring day.

Little League International Bat Rules Changes - Updated 4/4/12
posted 12/19/2011 by Donald Fletcher
In an effort to provide timely information on bat rules, Little League International today announced the bat specifications and standards for the 2012 season.  For the complete story, please go to the link:

Little League International Announces Bat Rules Changes for 2012 Season

UPDATE 4/4/12 from Little League International

In an effort to provide more reader-friendly content, Little League International has "refreshed" the Little League-Approved 2 ¼ Bat List in PDF format.

While no changes have been made to the content of the list, the organization of the list itself has received a facelift, which will assist in locating and identifying the various bats.

The "refreshed" list includes all licensed models organized by manufacturer, including those composite barrel bats that have received a waiver from the composite-barreled bat moratorium.

The old version of the list organized the bat models based on their composition (i.e. Alloy, Composite, Composite Handle/Alloy Barrel), while this "refreshed" version of the list not only provides you with a description of the composition of each bat's barrel and handle, but it lists the licensed bat models based on their manufacturer (i.e. Anderson, COMBAT, Demarini, Easton, etc.).

Earlier this year, Little League International introduced a new mobile-friendly webpage for the bat list: http://www.LittleLeague.org/BatList. The page is designed to scale to the various screen sizes available on mobile devices.

The webpage provides a current listing of licensed baseball bats with a 2 1/4 inch maximum diameter that are currently approved for use in the baseball divisions of Little League (Majors Division and below).

The combination of the mobile-friendly webpage and the "refreshed" bat list in PDF are intended to provide users with a better overall experience while searching for Little League-approved bat information, whether at home, work, or on the go with a mobile device.
